Description: A quiet play about four Iranians preparing for an English exam in a Tehran storefront school, where language holds the promise of identity, separation, and a new life.
Why you should care:
What is lost in translation? - It is hard squeaking.. I mean speaking a foreign language. If you’ve tried you quickly realize how silly you feel trying to say the simplest phrases. But does our limited expression change who we are? Do we have to change our name, our friends or our family to fit in? Does learning a new language force us to erase our past?
#Deep - Written by Sanaz Toossi, a 2023 Pulitzer prize winner, this play is smart and pushes you to think differently. It has moments of humour with songs, funny films and awkward accent encounters but at its heart its an intellectual play about language and expression.
Lighting Magic - Not spoken about enough but there is a quiet beauty to the shadows and transitions between scenes in this classroom, the staging is new for the broadway run and quite magical.
