THE RAT’S RECOMMENDATION: Eureka Day

Description: Eureka Day is a play about a private California school that prides itself on inclusion—until a mumps outbreak forces the board to confront their liberal vaccine policy and make a divisive decision.
Why you should care:
Great Cast - Super strong performances from Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) as the tech bro woke stay-at-home dad and Jessica Hecht (Breaking Bad) as the villain-ish inclusion leader.
Funny, but also grounded - It’s at times raucous, but mainly funny in a kind of oh-shit I have been there before and know exactly how these type of people in community led conversations go.
Clever Projection There’s an amazing scene with a Zoom call and onscreen comments that had people in stitches, so much we couldn’t even hear the lines. It’s kind of like watching a YouTube Video and reading the comments but in real life on stage. Smart.
Timely - This play couldn’t have been more on the button in terms of topics: vaccines, diversity and inclusion. And it hits the themes in a sneaky way that doesn’t feel preachy. It’s a sincere and moving reflection on the conflict between parental love and grief, between self protection and community consideration.
Show Duration: 95 minutes
Location: NYC Broadway - MTC Theatre
Who to bring: Your friend who has a New Yorker subscription, your partner if they have or want kids, your teacher.
Tips: Get drinks beforehand and definitely go to restroom before you sit down. A 95 min play with no intermission tests even the most sturdy of bladders.
