THE RATโ€™S RECOMMENDATION: Maybe Happy Ending
Cheese Score: ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€ (3/5)

Description: In a futuristic Seoul, two helper-bots, Oliver and Claire, break their programming to explore love and self-discovery. Their journey challenges what it means to be human in a world of machines โค๏ธ

Why you should care:

  • Love uniquely - This show feels so intimate for a musical - itโ€™s poignant, contained and with a small cast. The musical asks us questions about what it is to love? Where do we learn how to love? Can we forget our past loves? How can we teach each other how not to be alone? This musical about robots - somehow - has a beating heart.

  • Jawdropping Set Design - This set feels magical, the walls come alive, the whole stage tracks left to right, the motion of the stage is unlike anything you will have seen before. The hydraulic and precise movement reflects the robotic material perfectly.

  • Playful Robot Jazz - The musical has a niche and deep jazz through-line that provides another layer to the questions of love, loss and brings in an improvisational element. Thereโ€™s also Gil Brentley played by Dez Duron who absolutely kills the vocals.

  • Intriguing Parallels to AI & ChatGPT - In an age where we are becoming closer and closer to personalization and companions through AI. Do robots learn from humans, and if so, do we pass down generational trauma? What happens when weโ€™re no longer interested in them? Do they care? Do they feel?

  • Heartwarming - This show warmed the cold rat heart. We discover how human robots can be and messy we are. The show doesnโ€™t condemn humans or robots but instead finds the connection between them.

Show Duration: 105 minutes
Location: NYC Broadway - Belasco
Who to bring: Your crush, your lover, your partner, your hinge/raya/tinder date, your nerdy jazz friend, your house plant.

Tips: Itโ€™s another no intermission show - 105 mins nowโ€ฆ. they are getting longer. Get drinks beforehand and definitely go to โ€œlooโ€ before you sit down. A 95 105 min play with no intermission tests even the most sturdiest of bladders. Also careful with tickets on mezzanine, some restricted views.

Overall Cheese rating: 3/5
